The United States continues to face staffing shortages in hospitals and laboratories across all states. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of med techs* is projected to grow 11 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.
About 25,900 openings for med techs* are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire. The median annual wage for med techs* was $57,800 in May 2021.
Hospitals and laboratories are now hiring internationally educated medical technologists to try and ease these shortages.
