First Step to Working Abroad: Take the PEOS
Are you planning to work abroad?
Before you submit your resume, you’ll need to make sure that you have first completed the Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).
The Pre-Emplyoment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) is a prerequisite for anyone who wants to work abroad. Aspiring Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who successfully complete this seminar will obtain the PEOS certificate. And this certificate is an essential requirement for job applications with a POEA-accredited recruitment agency.
The PEOS used to be conducted in-person, at POEA training centers all over the country. During those times, applicants make a big effort to spend precious time and money to go to POEA training centers just to take the PEOS.
But thanks to the Internet, you can now take the PEOS online in the comfort of your own home using your computer or smartphone!
Before you dive deep into the subject of PEOS, you might want to check out this article to learn about the POEA.
What is the Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS)?
The Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) is the first step you’ll need to take to pursue a job overseas. This requirement began as a welfare intervention for departing OFWs. However, in 1993, it evolved into a major strategy to prevent illegal recruitment. JobStreet said in their article that the PEOS was formerly conducted in POEA’s 16 training venues across the country. That limited its information outreach and excluded those who can’t afford to go to the designated venues.
Today, the PEOS can be accessed by anyone from anywhere! The online seminars have helped more people become more informed without having to exert a lot of effort to travel to the training venues. The PEOS provides information on important topics including considerations before working abroad, employment contracts, country-specific information, fees and requirements and the benefits of having an overseas employment certificate.
Thousands upon thousands of Filipinos can now make better decisions and become better prepared to handle work and life overseas. Empowered with greater awareness through the PEOS, aspiring OFWs can gain valuable information to help them take steps in the right direction towards their dreams of working abroad.
Why do you need to take the PEOS before applying for work abroad?
Well first, the PEOS is mandatory.
Second, it is pretty light. You could finish the whole seminar in a matter of minutes. PEOS Online is packed with only eight modules. Every module comes with an assessment test and it takes about an average of seven minutes to complete each one. The modules cover Procedures on How to Apply, Working Abroad Safely, Costs of Application, What to Expect in an OFW Contract, Exercising Caution While Employed Overseas, and the Role of POEA in Protecting those Wanting to Work Overseas.
Finally, it is a seminar that will give you knowledge straight from the people who have been in the industry for decades. The content of the seminar is a constantly updated collection of experiences and insights gathered over several years.
How can I take the PEOS online?
The PEOS has 8 modules. Each module contains a short video presentation, to help you learn about basic information about job application and its procedure, requirements and processing fees. You’ll also gain a better understanding of the problems that you might encounter and information to help you spot illegal recruitment practices.
Taking the PEOS online is easy and simple. To begin, you have to get online. Remember that this process needs to be completed on your computer or your mobile phone.
Just follow these steps:
- Go to www.peos.poea.gov.ph and choose which training module is right for you. You may select from the following existing modules:
• PEOS Online for Professionals and Skilled Workers; and
• PEOS Online for Domestic Workers
- Fill up the form completely to register. Once logged in, you can navigate through and complete all eight modules.
- Review learnings by taking the Modular Assessment Test before proceeding to the next module. This ensures that you have understood each module well and have completed it.
- After completing all the learning modules, you can now print your certificate or take note of your certificate number. You will be asked to present this during your application.
